Ram Shergill is an artist who captures a kaleidoscope of different cultures through his photography. Merging bio-inspired design with adornment the work explores metamorphosis, taking on the concept of Deleuze and Guattari’s theories of ‘becoming other’.
Internationally recognised for his contribution to the industry, considered as one of the key imagists of the avant-garde ‘Cool Britannia’ fashion scene, Ram remains at the forefront of his visual field, using both photography and fine art to create a discussion that questions the notion of identity, dress, and the power of performance.
Initially Ram Shergill worked with Philip Treacy on a project and consequently was introduced and mentored into the world of fashion and art by Isabella Blow and Alexander McQueen, Ram became a force within the art world himself. Ever since working with Alexander McQueen in the early stages of his career, he has been inspired by the fashion icon that once stressed to him that he was influenced by the macabre.
His work has been shown in exhibitions worldwide including Sotheby’s, The Victoria & Albert Museum, The Wallace Collection, Sotheby’s, Somerset House and the Whitechapel Gallery. Shergill has had a book published by Thames & Hudson titled, ‘India Fantastique’ celebrating couturiers Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla. Ram continues to work for international editions of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, The Times, The Observer, Wallpaper and W magazine. He has also created highly innovative campaigns and books/ catalogues for Galeries Lafayette, Gilan Diamonds, Leica Camera, Harvey Nichols and Selfridges.
Ram Shergill has had a selection of his work acquired by the National Portrait Gallery for their permanent collection.
